Good design is innovative
The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.

Good design makes a product useful
A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.

Good design is aesthetic
The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

Good design makes a product understandable
It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.

Good design is unobtrusive
Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

Good design is honest
It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

Good design is long-lasting
It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years — even in today’s throwaway society.

Good design is thorough, down to the last detail
Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.

Good design is environmentally-friendly
Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

Good design is as little design as possible
Less, but better — because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

The Telegraph on June 4, 2011
I am troubled by the devaluing of the word “design”. I find myself now being somewhat embarrassed to be called a designer. In fact I prefer the German term, Gestalt-Ingenieur. Apple and Vitsoe are relatively lone voices treating the discipline of design seriously in all corners of their businesses. They understand that design is not simply an adjective to place in front of a product’s name to somehow artificially enhance its value. Ever fewer people appear to understand that design is a serious profession; and for our future welfare we need more companies to take that profession seriously.
Dieter Rams

Nest labs a Silicon Valley start-up directed by Tony Fadell, former Apple executive who lead iPod & iPhone development from 2001 to 2009, starts distributing this month what he defines as “a thermostat for the iPhone generation”.

I will not speculate about if it will be a best seller or not… It must be a best seller! Or at least according to their numbers Nest will pay itself within one year.

In my personal oppinion, the key of this story is someone, again, shows design is everywhere and if we think everything is invented we indeed think that because we fail to innovate.

Or af Tony Fadell says…

Last friday @BCN_HUB published an article about my new collections One & Two with a short review of my vision about the current situation for entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurs // 28/10/2011
A morning, after observing a lamp for a long time, I was amazed, once again, about the great amount of unnecessary elements we added to objects in their “evolution”. It was at this time when I decided to create a lamp that just light.

Choose a simple and visually clean bulb, refine design until a structure free of any unnecessary element was achieved, and make several trials to check that what is working on the paper works on the real world.

I like this project because style and function were not the only determining factors but also economics, social and ecologic factors were considered. “Both collections are conceived to minimize risk taken by the manufacturer and by getting rid of any previous inversion. The items are locally manufactured in order to benefit the local industrial network while the lamp design allows easy recycling”.

When I decided to start a indie production run, with prototypes and a photo session already done, I met Home switch Home girls and they made the designer-businessman relationship start really easy. With this partnership I left production issues in their hands while I can focus on new products creation.

Barcelona, has a long tradition both in industrial and creation entrepreneurship but starting a project is not easy but you can not wait until someone do it for you!

Current situation is an opportunity for everyone who is willing to start a project. This is a time to come back to garage experiments. In my personal case I left a forty hours a week job without any kind of motivation for a job where I’m surrounded by wonderful people who support me in the job I’m doing there and any independent project I’m involved in.

When I created One 1 my idea it was to produce the One by myself. Later when the opportunity to work with Home switch Home aroused I decided to let the manufacturing process in their expert hands so I can concentrate in creating new products.

This “indie” photo session was conducted by my friend Isaac Mateo and out of the ordinary jack-of-all-trades geek with a wide range of skills in which we can include photography.

Today it has been unveiled one of the improvements it will be done on the 5th Avenue Applestore. The Cupertino company added some information to the black cover on the glass cube of the store. As you can read they are completely replacing all the parts of the cube to make a glass cube of the same size with just 15 panels instead of the current 90 panels… You may love or hate Apple (although it’s difficult to find someone indifferent) but what’s clear is that is a company with a philosophy applied to every detail of the company.

Production from H Plus Son on Vimeo.

I always loved bikes and a few months ago I started looking with every time more and more interest to fixies. Today I was surfing the internet looking for some nice gadgets and I found this video where you can see the full process to build a bike rim from raw material to the finished rim. I thought it was interesting enough for sharing.
